I don't know your kid - my (longwinded) thoughts on censorship.

One thing I've come across in two of the jobs I've held (movie theatre, video store) is parents who want to censor their children, but don't really know how, and seek my advice in doing so.

I need to say: I'm not a fan of censorship. I believe that people reach a certain age (and not necessarily the "18" the government and film board believe) where there's just no sense sheltering them anymore.

The problem is, that age varies depending on the individual. For example, I was never censored in what I watched/read/listened to. I used to get ridiculously scared when someone would get stabbed or hacked in movies, and mom would consistently repeat, "It's not real, you know." It took me a few years to catch on to this fact, but eventually, I was fine with violence and gore and "scary" things.

As far as language went, where I live, everyone's got a foul mouth on them. In most cases, far worse than anything you'll hear in the movies. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I swear like a sailor. It's not ladylike, it's not polite - but I just plain ol' don't fucking care. I know when it's inappropriate to curse. I don't do it at work (at least, not around customers), I don't do it around the elderly, I don't do it around small children. So I don't consider it a problem. My filthy mouth has nothing to do with movies or television or rap music (LOL always the scapegoat, right?), it was environment and the kids at school and basically every other factor.

I wasn't even censored from "sexual content". This seems to be the one thing parents who censor their kids are concerned with, and I agree with them, for some reason I can't put my finger on, though I don't necessarily know if it's the right thing to do. I was allowed to watch movies with sex scenes. I didn't grow up promiscuous; far from it. I was actually the most moralistic person I knew, and still am. There was not and never will be casual sex in my life, I understand the consequences as well as the value of having a solid relationship if you're engaging in such things. No one will ever call me a slut. I won't get a disease. I won't get pregnant from a one night stand. I'm not saying that this has any relation to the fact I wasn't treated as a child and was never taught that sex was dirty or wrong, I'm just saying, it's possible.

I've known plenty of over-protected children who have grown into one of two things:
1) Socially awkward young adults or
2) Rebellious young adults who make poor life decisions.

The former is preferable to the latter, but neither are the ideal. In 6th grade I had a silly little website. I'm talking pre-Piczo days. It was an Angelfire site, all text, not a single picture. On it I mentioned my friends - by first name only. One of my friends had a ridiculously common first name. Not only was it a common name, but the most widely-accepted spelling of said name. Anyway, I remember her parents contacting me, referring to it as "this so-called website" and telling me I had to take her name off of it or they'd take legal action.

Yep, they email-intimidated an 11-year-old girl because their daughter, whom they'd named something that a dozen girls in every grade are named, was mentioned in passing on my website. Looking back, it was a lulzworthy event, at the time, I was terrified.

Long story short, their little girl they worked so hard to protect got pregnant and had a kid in high school. Again - I'm not saying there's a direct correlation. Maybe it would've happened either way. But my point is, their extreme protective measured didn't prevent it.

This has just been my personal experience - I was uncensored, unsheltered, and turned out just fine. Anyone who tries to argue otherwise would only cite my lack of post-secondary education, which is something that is all about the $$$$ and has nothing to do with my un-censored upbringing, thankyouverymuch.

Video games are a hard point. The Call of Duty games are ridiculously violent, come with a 17+ rating, but the majority of parents let their kiddies play them. My 10-year-old brother loves them. They've got bad language to match the violence, too. Despite this, my brother isn't a senselessly violent kid; he knows the violence is just a game, and such bizz doesn't fly in real life.

I think it's an intelligence and awareness thing, at the end of the day. Disturbed people who watch violent movies or play Grand Theft Auto might go out and kill someone, however not only are they the minority, but if you're that messed up mentally, if it wasn't the movie/game/song/book that triggered your outburst, something else eventually would've been your breaking point. There's no sense blaming media and pop culture.

That being said,  I don't doubt for a moment my kids will be smart (because I won't mate with anyone who isn't at least as intelligent as I am, I have a very low tolerance for stupidity, in case you can't tell haha), and if they mature at the rate myself or my siblings did, I will treat them as my parents treated me: a human being with real thoughts and opinions, capable of discerning what is real and what isn't, what is acceptable and what isn't, who can watch a movie like Boys Don't Cry or Law Abiding Citizen and be able to handle it, comprehend it, and discuss how it made them feel.

I should mention that, in case you think I sound crazy, I'm not talking about eliminating boundaries for little kids. 10 and under is a whole different ball game. But once you're 11 or 12, you're capable of so much more mentally, and have been exposed to your fair share of how un-pretty the world can really be.

Last year, a woman called looking for recommendations for a horror movie for her 11-year-old daughter. I initially jumped to movies like The Grudge or The Ring. Silly little thrills with minimal violence and language, and no sex. I also mentioned PG-rated titles like The Sixth Sense. She deemed all too scary, and The Sixth Sense, "Had that scene where the boy was a ghost and missing part of his skull for a second, didn't it? Not until she's at least 13!" Had the movie been released in 2010 instead of 1999, her daughter could've went to movie theatre and seen it herself without an adult. That case just seemed a little extreme for me.

You get the other end of the spectrum where people think Pirahna is appropriate for their 9-year-old. Some movies are just filled with gratuitous nudity and gore and language that aren't conducive to the plot, and although a 14 or 15 -year-old would see the entertainment value, it's just exploitation for smaller kids. But what can I say? I don't know your kid. S/He might be insanely mature, who am I to judge? I can only warn.

Which brings me full circle to the top of this blog; sometime, parents ask me to be the deciding factor. Sure, I've seen most of the movies they're asking about. I know what's in them. But how do I know if a movie like, say, What Lies Beneath is going to meet their standards? My sister and I were 12 and 9, respectively, when we watched that movie - every weekend, I might add, we loved it. It's not overly-objectionable, but what if I say it's perfectly fine, and it turns out I ended up with helicopter-Mom who thought The Sixth Sense was inappropriate for a kid going on 12?

Parents, don't put me on the spot. I know what kind of movies I'd let my future kids watch, depending on their maturity. I know people in high school who shouldn't be watching certain movies because they're so immature. And yet my brother sat through the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy with me when he was 5-years-old, and was no worse for the wear - in fact, he loved it. I don't know a damn thing about how you raised your kid. I don't know what your values are -vs- my own.

The only thing you can really do is sit down, watch the movie first, and decide for yourself. Or go on IMDb and read their Parental Advisory pages - it has every detail in each category (sex/nudity, language, violence, scary/disturbing images) written out, just the facts, totally unbiased, so you can make the call.

However, as any kid will vouch for - if there's something they really want to see, and you're not letting them. They'll find a way. Just keep that in mind.

I could go on a completely separate tangent in literary censorship (not a day goes by I don't feel terribly for what Judy Blume went through), but that's another rant for another day.

*glove slap* I challenge you - well, actually, myself - to a duel (and by duel, I mean, let's be responsible and update the blog!)

I always try to construct what I'm saying in a coherent, neat, pretty, easy-to-follow manner, so all you lovelies can follow it with ease (also, I just found out via spellcheck that Google Chrome considers "lovelies" a word; that's kick-ass), but I've gotta say, it always makes me feel like I'm writing an essay. I think I'd update this bitch far more often if I kept it to one fairly organized, possibly list-form'd entry per month, and just let the word vomit... ew, spew*? the rest of the time.

I feel like I'm slackin', and that's one thing I must admit I'm terribly awesome at. If being a slacker were considered a professional position, it would be my full-time job and I'd be raking in the dough. Unfortunately, quite the opposite is true in life. And that's why I'm broke as a joke - I'm lazy. I really am.

But, I don't wantttttttttttt to be slacking, which is why I'm going to ease up on the heavy format of my rants and raves. I pinky-promise to post 3 times this week. As in, from today til next Tuesday. There will be 3 updates. Not one. Not even just 2. THR33. Like, not including this. What I'm typing right now is useless, and you're not even reading it. Don't lie to me!

It's go-time, fuckers. Let's see if I can do this.

PS, Twitter. Follow me. herpderp.

*that's just gross.

CHRISTMAS IS EATING MY TIME/HYPOTHETICAL SOUL

So, I'll give you two things this week:

First, this is the picture my grandparents are getting framed copies of /easiest gift ever/ (they loves them some kitties).

Getting a picture of them together in their Christmas garb proved to be an impossible task.
And secondly - and this is terribly un-Christmassy, but a Thing nonetheless - My People You'll See in Hell article, about the McDonald's murders that happened in my town in '92. Seriously sad stuff. I wrote this for them back in October, am insanely proud of myself (a LOT of work went into it), but never got around to linking it til now. For those of you who don't know. PYSIH is on my "linkage to awesome" page, and is one of my favorite websites. It's fantastic if you like reading about criminals.

And that's all I have for you. I turn 22 next week, ew. I'll try to get something up here before then. Happy holidays, bitches!

Someone in Denmark is reading my blog.

Today I took a stroll through my stats. It's something I do fairly regularly, just to see if it's actually worth it to keep writing this thing, or if I should crawl back to Livejournal, with my tail between my legs and the Friends-only filter protecting each post I make**.  Apparently, enough of you keep coming back... for some reason? to make writing worth-while. Thanks for being epic, homies.

One interesting thing I found whilst perusing my blog factoids, was that the posts with the most views are the ones where I am systematically insulting and yelling at some (or near every) faction of the human race. Because this has the most views, this post comes in second, and this one is third. The fourth is another ranty one.

Now, when I complain or go on my diatribes of this nature IRL, people get mad at me. They tell me to shut up, and people love to complain about how much I (and others) complain. (Hypocrisy, much, kids?), which is why I try to post about other things on here; TV shows, movies, things that don't make me angry. And guess what I've found? No one reads that shit!

So maybe, just maybe - someone out there (or several of you, anyway) agrees with me; it feels good to get stuff off your chest! Swearing is therapeutic! People are assholes! And the ones that aren't don't need to be written about - they can keep on being cool in private.

And that's why I love the internet. Like-minded people are easy to come across (no matter what you're into... seriously, Google any word you can think of and add "sex with" to the beginning; you'll find a forum, no doubt).***

As for the title of this li'l diatribe, I am continually surprised by the "audience" statistic, when I see this:

Canada makes sense. The US, sure.  #4 on the list is the UK. English-speaking realms. Then there's South Korea and Lebanon and Germany and I start to get confused, but it's in small numbers, so whatever. But - DENMARK? My dear Danish friend(s?), thank you for your support. Keep reading, I love you.

**I haven't been on LJ is so long, because I have nothing to say! My life is literally the same, day-in, day-out, and I love it that way, but don't feel the need to update anymore. So after 5 years of LJ-ing, I've pretty much given up.

*** Please don't do this to yourself. And if you do, I am responsible for nothing - no scarring, trauma, nightmares, or things that can't be "un-seen".

My wonky, irrational fears, in list-form for your enjoyment (and my embarrassment).

This won't be nearly as long as my usual offering**1 , as I can make it fairly succinct and list-like. And by list-like, I mean... yeah, just a list. Yet another list for y'all to feast your wandering eyes on.

I am one of the most cowardly individuals you're likely to encounter. And I can admit to that, which I therefore like to think affords me the right to be so shamelessly lame. Some things I'm afraid of are perfectly understandable (albeit a bit paranoid), like getting raped walking home from work, getting in car accidents, getting robbed at gunpoint while working.**2

*1: I'm only 3 items in to the list, and have found that statement is already a filthy lie.
**2 Seriously, all of these things are legitimately awful and harrowing experiences, and also not even a bit far-fetched. The odds? Okay, other than the car accident (1 in 50,000 chance, fuckers. The chances of winning the lottery -specifically 649- are 1 in 13, 983, 816 - that is not a number pulled out of my ass, click the numbers, et voila, Wikipedia doesnt lie) maybe they aren't so probable, but I like to think that doesn't mean I shouldn't still be worried.

Other fears I have are a little... odd, I guess. Would be the most basic, politically-correct term. My phobias have been a great source of torment and angst to myself - and an even better source of entertainment for my friends over the years. Here are just a few.

***

[1] Sand: No, you're not reading that wrong. That isn't a typo that should say "Satan" (I'm not religious) or "Santa" (that is a real phobia, I just learned). I mean the teeny, tiny, rough granules you see on a beach, that you can make castles out of, or heat super-high to make glass. I am not afraid of it in the sense that I see it and I panic; it's more I can't stand the FEEL of it. It's just find and dandy when you're on the beach, but once you're back in the car and it's all over your feet... in the shower and it's in your hair.... and, the very worst - about to bite in to some food you had at the beach with you and BAM! Grainy, disgusting, unexpected texture (I'm gagging thinking about it), I just can't effing deal. It sends a chill down my spine. So I'm more disgusted by it than scared, but I still count it among my fears.

[2] Butterflies: There are millions of people, just like me, who can't stand insects or bugs. Name me one person (other than a scientist who studies them) that likes cockroaches. Show me someone who doesn't at least cringe a bit at the thought of June bugs (or run screaming, like I do). It's understandable; they're small and they can crawl in to ... places. Is it rational? No, not really; we're far, far bigger than they are. But it's a fact of life. Now, there are some bugs people like: lady bugs, fireflies, butterflies... No, I hate them all equally. But butterflies actually frighten me. I do not like things that fly. Simple as that. Birds make me nervous (especially seagulls... I've seen some that are easily 3 times the size of my fucking cat!). Junebugs can get in your hair. Mosquitoes carry disease.... and butterflies land on you. *shudder* They're so fast, and they flit here and there, and they're unpredictable... and I don't care how damn pretty you all think they are. I find them very, very unnerving.

[3] Losing my toes: This is my classic fear that started at a very young age, and provides great amusement to my friends. Is it irrational? Yes. Is it easily the worst fear of mine, hands down? Also yes. This particular issue has left me with OCD-like tendencies when it comes to counting my fingers and toes. I think it all started when I was a kid; the fam had a 2-door car, and we were all down at the walking track/playground at the bottom of my (former) street. It takes the length of one song on my iPod to get from my parents' house to that walking track, so why we took the car, I'll never know. I was probably 7 or 8 years old, and my sister would've been 4 or 5. We were leaving, piling in the car, I slammed the door... and my sister's entire fucking hand was caught in the door. AND IT WAS SHUT. THE WHOLE CAR DOOR LATCHED.

I'll give you a second to let that sink in.

Well, she screamed and screamed. Luckily, it got her down by the knuckles, so she didn't lose any fingers. Nothing was broken, just sprained and bruised and an overall mess. So, that led me to being completely paranoid every time I closed the door to a vehicle - to this day. It has gotten a little better over time, but not much. My toes are worse than my fingers, however. I have to wiggle them every now and then to make sure they're still there. Don't even get me started about jumping from any height in to water. I jumped off of Albert Bridge (it's like 20-30 feet above the water, to my readers recruited from YouTube and LJ), hit the water in a manner that left me with bruised thighs and sore bones, but the first words out of my mouth when I surfaced? "ARE ALL MY TOES STILL THERE?" I swear, I have 3 witnesses who will attest to it.

[4] All my appliances are out to get me: Luckily, this one has subsided a LOT in the past 4-5 years. Basically, my brain thinks that every time I plugs anything in to an electrical outlet, I am going to be electrocuted. Especially appliances in the bathroom and kitchen, near water. Blame it on too many movies, too many books, too many horror stories. Up until very recently, I would check every plug before it went anywhere near the socket - feel it with my fingers for moisture, and then actually physically dry it off, just to be sure. It was completely compulsive.

Fun fact: Though neither of us had ever discussed it, one day I found out - my mom does it too! So we're both crazy, apparently.

[5] Twi-tards and people with Bieber fever: Actually, this can be filed under so many categories: things I hate, things I laugh at, things I pity, things I just don't fucking understand... and yes, things that scare me. First of all, die-hard fans of anything are frightening, but some are more benign than others. For instance, I'd rather hang out with 500 people in cloaks and wands than just one Juggalo (if you were unfamiliar with Juggalos, and clicked that link, I'm so sorry I just ruined your life a little).***3

***3 I read ED. I'm sorry; I do. I love it. I like to assume most of you don't, or won't, or are unaware of its existence. Which is why I linked you to the Wiki page of Juggalos... for a much more entertaining and honest article: the Encyclopedia Dramatica Link. (Nothing on that site is for the faint of heart, btw.)

That being said, I don't pretend to be educated about Star Wars or Star Trek, but I'd rather be at a convention for either, and publicly declare my ignorance, than go to the opening night of a Twilight movie. And I'm educated about the series. See, I don't believe in ripping something to shreds when you know nothing about it, because it makes you look like an ignorant asshole (and where I live, there's plenty). I know a lot about Twilight - and it's all horrific. I've gone in to it before, abusive relationship low self esteem reckless behavior gaping plot holes blah blah blah... but Twilight fans don't care how stupid it all is, and they will get violent if you try to make them see the light of reason. Bieber fans? Same deal. It's one thing to like someone's music, and another thing entirely to threaten to kill Kim Kardashian because of him. (Links to Perez!) Any fanbase that will threaten violence because of either
Italic
a) Something FICTIONAL. or,
b) SOMEONE FAMOUS YOU WILL NEVER PERSONALLY KNOW,

is horrifically terrifying, and scares me. A lot.
